South Carleton High School is a high school situated in the southwestern sector of the city of Ottawa, in the village of Richmond, Ontario. The school is under the jurisdiction of the Ottawa Carleton District School Board. The SCHS attendance boundaries cover a major section of the southern part of the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board. Students come from all over the southwestern sector of the city but mainly from the communities of Stittsville, Manotick, Richmond, Riverside South, North Gower, Munster, Kars, Fallowfield, Ashton, Burritts Rapids and the area connecting these communities. SCHS feeder schools include Goulbourn Middle School, Rideau Valley Middle School, and A. Lorne Cassidy Elementary School.

The school opened its doors in 1952 to 263 students and 13 teachers under the leadership of its first principal, W.W. Powell. South Carleton's 50th anniversary was celebrated in 2002.

Athletics

South Carleton has a wide range of athletic activities. It has a top-notch alpine ski team that has won 4 OFSAA titles including 2 in 2002 as well as 2008 and 2009 and has collected 12 team and 9 individual medals at OFSAA since 1999. In 2011 the team made a great effort at OFSAA and NCSSAA winning 4 team golds at NCSSAA and three silvers at OFSAA. It also has a very respectable wrestling program that has won the NCSSAA championship for the past several years, and produces nearly a dozen OFSAA wrestlers each year. The Senior Men's Rugby team has gone undefeated in regular season in 2007 and 2008, including a 2008 NCSSAA championship win. South Carleton's varsity swim team was formed during the 2010-2011 season. The swim team was decent for a new team, led by top swimmer Jimmy O'Rourke who captured the Storm's first two NCSSAA medals, both of which were gold. He represented South Carleton at their first ever OFSAA for swimming claiming 6th and 7th place finishes. The Storm basketball team has won several city titles in its history, including the most recent visit to the NCSSAA championship in the 2008-2009 season. The South Carleton Junior Boy's soccer team captured the 2008 NCSSAA Gold Medal after an undefeated season. South Carleton's football team had reached the NCSSAA finals in 2006 and 2008, losing both times and lost in the NCSSAA semi-finals in 2007. The football team had a down year in 2009, finishing 0-6.

During the 1996-1997 school year, South Carleton changed its athletics name from the "Redskins" to the "Storm." This decision was controversial, pitting students who viewed the Redskins name as historic versus those who considered the name to be racist; debates were held on both sides, with First Nations people speaking their consent for the historic name. In the end a student-body vote led to the new "Storm" name winning the day. The new Storm logo, however, was a white man with a pointed hat; many people believed it looked like a Ku Klux Klan member, so the logo was changed in 2010 to a tornado. This is currently in conflict with Holy Trinity Catholic High School because their name is the "Tornadoes".

Bob Erwin Football Field

On October 6, 2005, during half-time at the Senior Football game, the South Carleton Football Field was dedicated to Bob Erwin, teacher and coach at SC for 33 years. Stu Boardman, Dept. Head and Football Coach gave the following as just a few of the reasons for the dedication: “Bob is an individual who has enriched high school sports at South Carleton with his motivational techniques, commitment and loyalty towards his athletes, colleagues and numerous students over the years, exemplifying the values of fair play and sportsmanship. He has been the keenest supporter of helping students who might otherwise have fallen through the cracks, by espousing the “Principle of Education through Sports.”
